Unable to read file message

When I try to open a (my most important) excel file, I am getting the
message 'Unable to read file'.

I have tried saving it to disk and opening it on Win98 (I have xp
thinking
maybe it was something to do with the OS (I read something like that
somewhere on the 'net).

Any ideas? Has this happened to anyone, and with successfu
resolution?
