Unable to POP

I am using Outlook 2000 as my default email client. For my default email
account, I am able to send messages via SMTP but unable to receive messages
from the POP server. I consistently receive a timeout error when attempting
to receive incoming mail with this account.

What I have done:
1) checked and verified POP3 server name
2) checked and verified Account name and password
3) checked and verified POP3 port number
4) deleted then added acount in Outlook

What is really wierd is that I am able to POP this same account with my
laptop (using Outlook), my palm phone and web based accounts yet the
'Outlook client' on my desktop will send but not receive.

NOTE: to send messages with this account authentication is required (uses
same settings as incoming server option).

Any ideas on how to correct this issue?

TIA

Yes I am behind a firewall but that seems a little illogical because I can
access my mail through my laptop when connected to my network. If you are
suggesting that my mail server is behind a firewall, remmber that with the
exact same Outlook setup on my laptop and with my laptop connected to my
network, I can access this POP3 account. In addition, I can access my POP
through other devices such as my palm phone which is utilizing 110.

Any other ideas?

Not if you were using a software firewall on your desktop whereas your
laptop, palm, and whatever else don't use a software firewall and
instead rely on a hardware or software firewall in a router or gateway
host or no firewall is in their path to the Internet. The same
differential might apply for anti-virus software that is installed on
your desktop but nowhere else.

Another cause for timeouts is excessive retries. Do a "ping -n 100
<pop3server>" to get an average of how many packets were lost, if any.
If the count is high, the repeatitive retries could cause a timeout.

If you have a NAT router, try resetting or power cycling it. Also see
if reestablishing an IP address to the NAT router from your ISP's DHCP
server gets it working again. I've actually experienced an expired
DHCP-assigned IP address (from ISP to my router) in the 192.168.x.x
range which doesn't work. Why they assigned that IP address to my
router I do not know, but occasionally I have problems and have to use
the DHCP release and renew from my router's admin web page.

Ok... I wasn't clear about my firewall. I have a network behind a
router/gateway with a NAT firewall. Both my laptop and desktop comprise my
network. There is identical virus software on each as well as identical
software firewalls.

With all of that said, I extended the server timeouts in Outlook and low and
behold, I was able to retrieve my POP3 email. It is a little wierd though
that all of a sudden I had this problem. I will take you suggestion and
reset my router just to be safe.

Thanks for the responses and help...
