When I go through the Device Manager "Monitor" is not listed. As I stated
originaly in the display settings the properties button is inoperative so I
cannot get to the option to install the .inf file.
Try Plan B or C then.
Plan B: Right click the INF file for the monitor and select Install.
Restart the computer. If the monitor info is not updated, use Add New
Hardware Wizard to select the brand/model.
Plan C: Delete the existing plug and monitor listing. Have Device Manager
scan for changes. It may reinstall the same plug and play monitor but you
may also get the "new hardware" prompts. If the new hardware prompts
appear, take the choices to manually locate the driver. Direct the dialog
to the INF file for the monitor.
NOTE: In XP, having the generic plug and play monitor should not limit the
size of the desktop. By default, XP will set the desktop resolution at the
highest one that it knows the monitor can handle. In most cases, this will
be at least 1024x768.
It is more common to be limited to 800x600 if the generic display driver is
installed - VGA or VGASafe. The resolution in this case is to install the
proper display driver for the display adapter (video card). In some cases,
there may be motherboard drivers that need to be installed before the
display driver.
For example: I run multiple monitors (two different Samsung models) on a
dualhead display card. On a new install, XP can identify the one newer
model but not the other older model which shows up as Plug and Play
Monitor. Eventually I install the INF for this monitor but until that
happens, I've never had a problem getting both monitors at 1280x1024 as
long as the correct motherboard and display drivers are installed.
