Unable to join 2003 AD

I have just upgraded my NT 4 network. I currently have a 2003 Active Directory as the "pdc" a 2000 Advanced Server, Service Pack 4 as a "standalone" and a NT 4 BDC. (Waiting for opportune time to upgrade this file server). Also this was the PDC of the old domain

I upgraded to 2003 by installing a new computer with NT 4 SP6 as a BDC. I then promoted this to be the PDC of the domain. I then upgraded it to 2003. I then installed active directory, dns, wins, dhcp and vpn on this computer. Since then I have had numerous problems. I upgraded another NT BDC to 2000 Advanced Server. With this computer I am unable to make it a BDC and host the active directory. I get the following error from the active directory wizard

Active Directory Installation Failed. Failed finding a suitable domain controller for domain mis.dakotasioux.com. The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.

I am able to log into this machine using accounts from the domain (domain administrator for example). I can also use other domain resources, to include a share I created on the 2003 box. So connectivity should not be an issue.

I am also unable to connect to this box with NT workstations running SP 6 and dsclient installed (required). I can connect to this computer using XP workstations however

Any help regarding this will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Michael-

Take a look at this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;555040

Basically, did you run Forestprep and Domainprep on your existing AD prior
to adding a 2003 DC to your domain? Hope this helps.

are your clients and servers pointing their dns/wins settings to your AD
server ? on your server run dcdiag and netdiag from support tools and post
back your results.
