Unable to Hilite & delete with keyboard delete key?

I am not able to delete more than one character at a time in a word document.
When I highlight a group of characters (text) and hit the 'Delete' key,
nothing happens. I can use Ctrl X twice and it will delete it but unable to
just hit 'Delete'
