Unable to get past entering in product key

G

Guest

Yes, the C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources folder was created and there are files in
there. I was able to bring up task manager anytime I entered in the product
key and it would show it as "running" but it would just sit at the product
key screen with an hourglass cursor. The opposite happened if I didn't enter
the key and instead selected the version. Task Manager would take longer to
load and it would show the setup as "not responding."

Hello,
Looking at this log, there is nothing erroring out. So it looks like setup
is continuing.
Note the change in the timestamp so is shows around an hour and twenty
mintues.
No error messages yet at least in this log file.
At this stage we have to collect information and copy files to the system.
I presume this was from the \windows folder.
Was there a log file at the C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log
as well?
Was the C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources folder even created?
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Family Discount Ordering Trouble (Resolution)

Hi Eveyrone. I finally got an answer. From what I have been told:

The Vista Family Discount (VFD) team has found the problem with the product
keys. Turns out they are not Vista Keys. The VFD team is working on a fix
and will email out new keys to everyone with in 4-5 days.

If your key does not work; odds are its one of the bad ones. If you do not
hear back from the VFD team with a new key next week; I would send them an
email or call:

email: (e-mail address removed)
Phone: 1-800-835-0663

I hope this helps!
Thanks and sorry for any issues...

Hello Brian,
This shouldn't be a key issue. A bad key should generate an error message,
not leave the system in a state where setup appears to be hanging.
Unless this thread has changed symptoms on me. The issue as first reported
was after a key was entered setup just displayed a blank screen.
That is not what a invalid key response.
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Unbelievable.

Thanks for that, Jane. Good info for those upset about this.

It looks like you got a canned response to the problem. The actual solution
is that they are sending out new keys. (I've already gotten mine).

Same Issue no resolution and I canot take back my copy of vista so now its
like we are stuck between a rock and microsoft....

there has got to be a better answer then bad product key, because even if
you skip the product key enter and choose to enter it later it still locks up

I gave resovled my problem following the advice from a different string.
Look for keywords "clean upgrade" and you will get great instructions.
Basically, install a clean install without providing the key. Once this is
done, upgrade vista with vista entering the key and doing a custom install.
Et voila, presto magic.

I think the string was 'You CAN do a clean install of Vista Upgrade;

I had absolutely no problems at installing Vista Home Premium (System
Builder Kit).
Of course, I did do a few things first:
1) I bought a new Dell Dimension E520 with 2GB Dell ram, including an ATI
x1300Pro w/256MB of dedicated VRam. This machine was guaranteed by Dell to
be "Vista Premium Capable".
2) I installed Vista "clean" rather than an "in-place upgrade" (the System
Builder kits won't do an in-place upgrade, anyway).
3) Before Vista was installed, I downloaded and installed the latest Dell
BIOS updates (for Vista), as well as all Dell-recommended updates on their
Website.
This led to an error-free installation which took less than 30 minutes.

In addition, after installation, no device on my computer had a yellow
exclamation point next to it in Device Manager.
I'm really sold on Dell hardware because of this.

The ONLY thing I can't stand about Dell is their "online support" system.
For all intents and purposes, there simply is none. Their answer for EVERY
issue is to reinstall, or exchange hardware items. However, all hardware
exchanges under warranty arrived within 2 days of ordering them.

However, Microsoft does NOT guarantee that this method will keep Product
Activation intact, or that those who do this will have no problems with
Activation subsequently. It's just not been tested by Microsoft.

This is not just a digital down loads that are messed up. I bought a new
Microsoft Home Premium OEM from Newegg.com and am having the same problem. It
just sits there and never does anything. When try the telephone method it
does not accept the product key that is on the package. It apparently wants
all numbers, but mine has a combination of alpha and numeric characters.
Sorry if I posted this wrong, but this is my first post. Thanks!

Sascha Benjamin Jazbec

those required numbers are not your Product Key but the activation-code.

just go "activate by telephone", pick your residing state and phone them up,
they will tell you what to fill in after cheking your key.

From an elevated command prompt give the command: slui 4

From the resulting dialog box pick your region and follow the steps on the
next window that has all the numbers.

Thanks! I will give that a try.
