Unable to edit registry

Erik

A computer I am working on has a virus and we are trying
to remove it. We have removed any files that were
infected and now have to get to the registry to remove
some of the keys the virus added. But when I try regedit
or regedt32 on the machine, it says "registry editing has
been disabled." We are logged in as the local
administrator and I can not get in. Any ideas?

I had the same problem yesterday. I ran regedt32.exe and
got error message "Registry editing has been disabled by
your administrator", but I was logged in as the
administrator!

Can anyone help please?

Use the Group policy editor
%windir%\system32\gpedit.msc
User Config\Admin Templates\System\Prevent Access To registry Editing
Tools="Not Configured"

I think Kelly's Korner is trustworthy... That's not to say that I wouldn't
download the .reg and inspect its contents first.

I believe that happens a lot. Mostly be users that have no idea what
the contents of the file actually do. Hazard warning! Reg. backup
warning!

Hi Dave - I would have assumed that you'd be familiar with Kelly's site.
:) It's a major XP (and Win2K) resource that's referred to pretty
constantly by all MVP's when appropriate, although perhaps better known from
the XP groups.

Nothing against the site or probably many others in general, but just the
same...... I can't imagine.

Dave,

I tried the Group Policy editor and the problem was
resolved.

Thanks a lot!

You're just too cautious Dave. Go out and get some adware/spyware, or
download and run some random executables. :))

And I too have nothing against a site with helpful solutions. It's
just a user-thing...
