Unable to download programs

Hi,

I am unable to download programs or video - I think that this started after
installing SP2 but could not definitively attribute blame. I can still
access all normal sites and download pictures and MP3s but NOT programs or
video. For example, I have just paid for and attempted to download DVD
Wizard Pro ver.1.0 but when I click on the link I immediately get:

The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be
experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser
settings.

The fact that it appears immediately makes me suspect that it may be one of
my settings blocking the site – I am running XP Pro, Windows 2003 and Norton
Internet Security Suite (inc. firewall) – the Windows firewall is turned off.

Anyone aware of any known problem?

I have attempted to download with the firewall turned off and even with the
entire security suite disabled but get the same result.

I have just spent 4 hours trawling through these pages but nothing I found
and tried solved the problem. Help!

Regards,

JS

And have you asked the developer/author if there may be an issue with the
download site? Just because it "happens immediately" doesn't mean it's your
settings. Have you tried downloading from anywhere else? Visit one of the
major download sites (e.g www.download.com or www.tucows.com) and try
downloading something. Does the same thing occur?

Suggestions:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and see what is listed under the key below: Many
have claimed that the culprit is listed there.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions

Go to IE/Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Uncheck Enable third-party browser
extensions.

If you using any third party download manager, disable or uninstall. If you
are using a Firewall program, check the settings. (Tiny is known for this).
If you using an "Ad" filter program disable it and see if downloads work.

Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types/[File Type in
Question]/Advanced. Put a check in the box that reads: Confirm open after
download.

Clean/clear out your Temp/TIF/cache files.
Temp Files: IE/Tools/Internet Options/Delete Temporary Internet Files
Temp Files: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp

Start/Run/CMD. Type this command: REGSVR32 URLMON.DLL. Ok/Reboot. Then go
to: IE/Tools/Internet Options/Programs/Reset Web Settings.

Internet Explorer/Tools/Internet Options/Connections Tab Click on LAN
Settings/Uncheck the Automatically detect settings Make sure no other
settings on this screen are enabled.

Go to Tools/Internet Options/Connections/Lan Settings in IE6 and you
will have a checkmark under "Proxy Server" if you are using one.

If it is an application download, see if the EXE is already listed here:
HKEY CLASSES ROOT\Applications

EXE Fix for Windows XP - Line 12 (Restores EXE association)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Restore lnk association: (Line 12) Link File Fix for Windows XP

To use the Regedits: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.
