Unable to download list of newsgroups

I go to Tools/accounts/News and get the Log on server window. Then I fill in
my user name, which is my email address and password, click to continue and
another window appears for a few moments and ng's start to download, but
then it cancels and returns me to the log on window.I have news server set
to mail.btinternet.com and my default news server.
I would be grateful if someone could set me right as the only ng's I can get
are the microsoft ones.

This is the ng for MS Access, the db application. You might want to post to
an outlook express ng, usually a part of IE ng's.
Or see btinternet help for the correct newserver setup.
I would have thought rather than mail.btinternet.com, it should be
news.btinternet.com

Since you've posted this question in the Microsoft Access database
newsgroup, I can assure you that you've already downloaded the correct
newsgroups for your Access database questions. Go ahead and post your
Access database questions here and the Access database experts will answer
your questions as soon as possible.

News-server names don't normally start with "mail". This sounds like a
mail-server, not a news-server.

Suggest you check your ISP Web site or contact them to clarify the name and
a copy of the instruction on how to access your ISP news-server.

BTW, don't use your real e-mail address in newsgroups unless you want a few
hundred spam mails everyday.
