Unable to download anything?

I keep trying to download from microsoft update sites and certain security
downloads. When I try the web page shuts down with the message "Internet
Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" It is driving me mad.
 
Your post is lacking in detail. We don't even know what version of
Internet Explorer or Windows you have, or what "certain security
downloads" means. I suggest you do a web search (try Google) using

internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close

as your search term. (You can copy and paste, if you like.) I'll bet you
come up with an answer real quick.
