unable to disable simple file sharing

I am running Win XP PRO.. I have encountered an issue
with a shared database located on a file server that
since upgrading to Windows XP from 2000, only one user is
able to access at a time. A potential solution found in
other web newsgroups is to disable the simple file
sharing. I am able to do this as an admininstrator, but
when a normal user does this (non admin), the check box
will not remain unchecked. for example, you disable the
check box from tools|folder options|view. once you hit
apply and close the window if you go back in the check
box is enabled again

Any ideas... any help would be greatly appreciated

This is not a setting that a limited user can change. It has to be done by an Administrator, and it is machine wide, at that point. How are you accessing the database? Via a DB front end? Web page via IIS? There are some issues with this and Microsoft Access and require a special connection string to enable sharing between multiple users, particularly in an IIS environment. It may also be necessary in the situation you describe of a file server.

Doug is quite correct. It sounds to me as though the
DB is being opened for exclusive access.
Can you provide some info on how the DB is used ?
Ex. an Access mdb being opened in Access on the
remote machines, with the mdb stored on the XP Pro.
