Unable to delete watermark despite following explicit directions!

Have you tried View | Header and Footer and tried to delete it from there?
 
A watermark is just a graphic anchored to the header and sent behind the
text. Word 2002 and above make inserting watermarks easier, but removing
them is sometimes harder if you have more than one section in the document.
On a page where the watermark appears, View | Header and Footer. Click on
the watermark and press Delete.
