unable to connect to Server 2003

Eric

Greetings,

Up until now, I had not given this much thought .We have 2 domains trusted
and from my XP Pro machine I could never connect to the 2003 Servers on the
other domain. I supply credentials to the other domain and nothing --
literally. No error message, no nothing. At the same time I can connect to
other machines in the other domain, any non-Server 2003 machines.

Now I need to figure this out. We brought a 2003 Server on our production
network, the one I login to every morning. I can get to this Server from
every other machine in our domain by supplying my credentials, which are
Domain Administrator. Just not from my XP Pro machine. Others try logging in
from my machine and they, too, cannot get to the 2003 Server. I've tried
names, IP addresses, etc. I can ping it, I can see it, I just cannot get to
it. As mentioned, no error message, rather the login prompt continually
appears afteer attempting to provide my credentials.

From the symptoms, it definitely is machine-sepcific and not user-related.
I'm guessing it is some strange policy I implemented to lock my machine
down, but now I can't get to the 2003 Server. I can get to our older 2000
Servers, which are also DC's.

My last resort is to probably apply the compatws.inf and cross my fingers.
In the past, I've seen drastic measures like this result in a bad state.

Has anyone had a similar problem? Or have any ideas I can try?

Is the 2003 Server a Active Directory server? If not then have you setup the
Log In Local rights?

Yes it is a DC within an AD forest. And yes, that right has been granted for
me.

As an FYI - I don't believe the log on locally right applies to these
symptoms. Accessing a machine or shares on a networked machine are driven by
network policies. I can sit down at this 2003 DC and log on, no problem. It
would affect it if I was trying to remote desktop in, but not access the
machine over the network.

Thinking more, can anyone think of different encryption or something that
2003 uses or needs over Windows Server 2000? Perhaps I configured different
encryption that is not being understood by 2003 Server. I'm just fishing
now...

Your local machine will be added to one of your active directories. However
that does not grant you rights to another DC in another tree. Have you setup
any trusts to this tree in the domain that you can log into?
