Unable to configure internet conn sharing using SMC switch

G

Guest

Hello all.
I have a WinXP Pro computer that has a wireless connection to a router/modem
setup for internet connection. Now, I would like to hook this PC via a NIC
to a SMC print server and switch so that I can have a home network and share
printers,
internet etc. One of the ports on the SMC switch is connected via ethernet
cable
to the NIC which is manually configured to 192.168.0.1. I have a linux box
which connects to another port of the SMC switch and has fixed IP of
192.168.0.2. Both
XP and linux box can see each other and even Samba works. However, I am
unable to connect to the internet from the linux box. What is it that I need
to do?
My SMC switch is actually a wireless access point also but I don't want to
use it for wireless access - I want to use it as a router/switch/print
server. I have read a lot of posts on this newsgroup but could not fix my
problem.
My ipconfig /all is below. I would appreciate any help.

Thanks,
Jayaram

bjatcox,

how about enabling Internet Connection Sharing on the XP
computer?

This also turns it into a DHCP server, so you may want to remove
the IP addresses and settings from all other computers and let
them get their IP addresses and settings (like DNS) from the
DHCP server, i.e. from your Windows XP computer.

The best setup might not involve Internet Connection Sharing at all.
More on that after I make some suggestions on how to get ICS to work.

The Local Area Connection shouldn't have a Default Gateway or DNS
Server address associated with it -- only the Wireless Network
Connection should. I suspect that you configured the Local Area
Connection manually, since ICS wouldn't normally make those settings.
In any case, I recommend un-sharing and then re-sharing the Wireless
Network Connection, and not making any manual settings.

Make sure that the SMC router/AP/switch is only functioning as a
switch. Connect the other computers to its LAN ports, not to its WAN
(Internet) port. Disable its built-in DHCP server. Turn off its
wireless transmitter if possible.

Make these settings on the Linux box:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1 or your ISP's DNS server

Now, for the other possible setup: disable ICS and create a network
bridge between the Local Area Connection and the Wireless Network
Connection. I've written a web page with details:

XP ICS - Network Bridge
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/networkbridge.htm

If that doesn't work right away, see this article for a possible
solution:

Steve,
Thanks a lot for the helpful reply. I did configure the LAN manually
and have made the changes for it as you suggest - remove sharing
and remove DNS and default gateway. The part I don't understand
is re-sharing the wireless connection part - if I try to do that, it
says that the IP will be set to 192.168.0.1 - but I want the wireless
connection to get its IP via DHCP (right now it is 192.168.1.101).

I tried the network bridge part but it messed up my wireless connection
and it appears as though XP thinks that I am saying that my internet
connection is via the NIC and not via the wireless connection. Maybe
I was messing with manual and automatic settings and that is what
caused this. Anyway, it is all very confusing to me. I am almost there
and can't quite understand why ICS is more complicated than it should be.

Jayaram

When you enable ICS on the wireless connection, ICS will set the IP
address of the wired connection to 192.168.0.1. It won't change the
IP address of the wireless connection.

Steve,

Good News. I have finally managed to set up ICS by adding a network
bridge and enabling the wireless card for sharing. Now I need to figure
out if it is possible to set up the print server.
Thank you again for your help.

Jayaram

You're welcome, Jayaram.

I'm puzzled by your message. You can either enable sharing on the
wireless card OR add a network bridge, but you can't do both. Windows
XP won't let you share a bridged connection. Which one did you do?

I recommend using the network bridge if it will work. If the network
bridge won't work, then enable ICS on the wireless connection, which
will give Internet access to another computer that connects to the
wired connection.

To enable ICS on a network connection:

1. Right-click the connection.
2. Click Properties.
3. Click Advanced.
4. Put a check mark in the box for Internet Connection Sharing.

I meant that in the properties settings for the wireless connection, I
checked
"share this computer's internet connection with other computers" and I
created
a network bridge between the LAN connection and the wireless connection. I
set the IP address of the network bridge to 192.168.0.1 since after creating
the
bridge, it had an IP starting with 169.

Jayaram

Either share the wireless connection or create a network bridge.
Don't do both.
