Unable to close word program

i am unable to close the whole word program. no problem opening or closing
files. word automatically RESTARTS after closing. very annoying. updates are
done regularly. please help. thanks

Which version of Word? No messages, just restarts?

2007 version. and yes, i would click on the x and a message "microsoft word
is not responding" appears followed quickly by "word is closing" then " word
is restarting". no other error messages or anything.
