Unable to back up. Cannot copy Pagefile.

I tried to back up using MS Ntbackup. However, I got the
message:The files for the recovery diskette could not be
created. The operation was aborted. I found the following
on the web: "CAUSE:This problem can occur if there are
legacy Microsoft Windows NT FTDisk sets on the computer,
which were created in Windows NT 4.0. FTDisk sets are not
supported in Windows Server 2003. RESOLUTION:To resolve
this problem: Use Ftonline.exe to bring the FTDisk sets
online.Back up any data in the FTDisk sets.
Delete the FTDisk sets, and then use dynamic volumes to
re-create them. "
What a complicated matter, which I don't understand. Is
there a better way.
I also tried to simply copy and paste to a
separate "slave" but get the message: "Cannot copy
filepage. It is being used by another person or
program." Again, nowhere to be found. Web instructions
are very complicated. Any suggestions. I don;t have
another backup software. Unacceptable from MS ! Thank
you eric

Check your backup options in your NTBackup job....it should be excluding
pagefile.sys (and other system files) automatically.

What are you trying to back up? Your entire system volume? A lot of files
will be in use & you won't be able to back them up - if you don't have a
specific need to back up the entirety of your hard drive(s) just select your
data folders....

As to the FTDisk message, I have no idea what that refers to.....

Thank you. I was trying to back it all up, just in case,
since my computer goes in for repairs. otherwise it
takes a lot of installing. However, I may do as youn
suggest and just back up the data files.

Nevertheless, could you tell me how to do it. I cannot
find the pagefile.sys in the tree. A search did not help
either. Would a software package be better? Any
recommendations? Thanks, eric

In NTBackup, tools, options, excluded files....

Re third party software - I haven't seen much for desktop OSes that I liked
much. Veritas is good for servers, but I don't believe they make a desktop
product...NTBackup usuallyworks just fine for me when I need desktop
backups.

Back up system files - but a good backup program should take special
steps over things like the registry. You might like to have an
independent backup of that - you can make one with the free ERUNT from
http://home.t-online.de/home/lars.hederer/erunt

You do *not* need a backup of pagefile sys or hiberfil.sys, which will
be renewed at a reboot anyway.
