Unable to apply critical updates

Jeff Rapp

Just had to replace 2 hard drives and installed XP Home.
Went to update and started with Service Pack 1. However,
installation stops with the following message:

The file c:\windows\system32\drivers\atapi.sys is open or
in use by another application.

Close all other applications and then click rentry.

I have closed all other application but I keep getting the
same error message. When I cancel the installation
process stops.

Visit http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/default.mspx
and select "Network Installation", download SP1a to a new folder, then install it
after performing a "clean boot".

Thanks for the reply. I downloaded the service pack. I
did the clen boot. Began the installation process and it
did the very same thing with the same message. I then
restarted in Safe Mode and attempted to install the
service pack. However, it did the vbary same thing. Is
there any way to disable or find out what the atapi.sys
file is doing?

ERROR: atapi.sys is open or in use by another application:

Perform a search on your computer for: atapi.sys
or may look for it in this location:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers
Once found, make a folder on your desktop and
drag the file into this new folder.
Now you can update Windows XP with SP1.

Once upgraded to SP1, you may delete this file...
dont worry! The SP1 installation will replace this file.
