Unable to access one popular website

F

flusters

I need help with what is probably a stupid question please. I have Win
98SE and IE6.

For research, I need to access a very popular (and unrestricted?)
website called www.rhymezone.com. Whether I click on this site from
Google or type in to the address bar, it always takes me to a site
called Red Hat Enterprise Linux Test Page. I can't get to the site from
this PC! I can get access from my college PC.

This is the only problem I have ever had in getting access to any
website. I run Spyware Blaster, AdAware and SpyBot. I deleted Zone
Alarm some months ago.

Do I need to change some settings in IE6 or what else do I need to do?
Thanks

Hi Flusters,
You didn't spot any thing strange there for the pre-mentioned website!.
Do you have a Anti-Virus software application/software installed to scan for
viruses on your system?.
Also try to rename the Hosts to Hosts.old and go to your IE properties and
clean your caches, internet files and cookies.
Close the The IE properties and Reboot your machine.
Have you installed any thing recently for softeware side point of view?.

I did go to the link in your first post and it is straight to the site not
redirected to another as in your case.
If the above didn't help download the HijackThis file and scan then send the
report to the Aumha forum or other forums for analysis:
HijackThis v1.99.1
http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware.

Hi nass

1. Hosts file renamed hosts.old and rebooted.
2. IE cache, files, cookies cleared out regularly - at least 4 times a
week.
3. The following are all updated and run at least twice a week: AVG
Anti-Virus (daily), AdAware, SpywareBlaster, Spyware Guard, CCleaner,
SpyBot, Pop-up Blocker & CWShredder - even tho the last two apps are
not updated. Do not tend to get problems.
4. No new software but I did struggle when I removed Zone Alarms from 1
PC a couple of months ago - but this is still running on the other PC
at the moment.
5. Should mention that we have 2 PCs and use a Belkin Wireless ADSL
Router for access. Both PCs have the same problem getting access to
that one website - rhymezone - but they have virtually the same
software and settings. The router was installed 2 years ago and has a
lot of settings (including firewall software which I don't understand!)
but I am not aware of any changes to the router settings or changes to
IE6 settings - apart from updates, but I may have done something
accidentally. Of course, I have never tried to access this particular
website (which is popular with teachers, students) until the past month
- so I could have had a problem for months ( or maybe years!).

I don't know whether the above changes anything. I'll wait to hear from
you whether or not i should go ahead with HiJackThis.

Thanks for your advice to date.

HI nass

One further point which may or may not help. Apparently, the site I get
diverted to when i click on www.rhymezone.com, is the site of a very
reputable company. Again, apparently Red Hat Enterprise Linux are very
well known software and systems developers. It is possible that they
developed the rhymezone site and by default, when access is not granted
for whatever reason, there is a switch to the developers site???? Is
the Linux thing a clue? Have I enabled/disabled something in IE6 by
accident?

Hi Flusters,
Please read this I got from cent.com and see if you have this feature on
your Router firewall:
The Belkin router comes with a six-month free trial for its parental-control
Web-content-filtering service, which will appeal to families. (After the
trial ends, the basic service costs about $25 per year.) Based on software
developed by a company called Cerberian, the filtering service lets you
easily shield youngsters from inappropriate Web material without installing
additional software on each networked computer. How does that work? The
router sends every Web page request to Belkin's database of 2.5 million
approved family-oriented sites. If the material fails to pass muster, a
warning screen pops up, and the user is denied access to the site. If the
site isn't on Belkin's list, it triggers an automatic appraisal process,
which takes several seconds to complete.

The filter generally worked well in day-to-day use and blocked some
disturbing material, although if Belkin's server is down, you're out of luck.
A software update that will be available in the coming months will solve this
problem by storing the list directly on your PC. Like all filtering software,
however, it also blocks innocuous sites, such as one for breast cancer
research and another on anatomy. Of course, you can also override the warning
and create your own policies. For a one-time fee of $10, you can upgrade the
service to keep a list of all sites visited from your network.

If it does n't apply to you then proceed with these steps:
1= Open the Router Web brwoser and go through the settings for :
Setup | Wireless | Security | Access Restrictions | Applications &
Gaming
See the settings for Security and Access Restrication you can assign the
website there or assign the IP address (72.3.230.21 this for rhymezone.com)
for it to be allowed.
Then save the settings and Reboot your machine then try the website.

2= Open a run command and type:
ipconfig /flushdns or winipcfg /flushdns
click [OK] and reboot your machine.
then download this tool to repiar winsock:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
Just run it and it will alert you when it finsish to reboot and see if the
issue of acessing the site is solved.

BTW. how did you unistall your ZA firewall, did you just delete the folder

Thanks

Hi Flusters,
Try to open your Hosts file and remove any entries for the pre-mentioned
sites.
To open the Hosts file do the following:
Double click windows Explorer on your Desktop or through Start >> Programs
Windows explorer.
Click on [+] C:\Windows look in the Right Pane and you will see the Hosts
file open it with notepad and remove any reference for these sites, save and
close the Hosts file.
If you can't see it clickon show hidden files on Windows.

Is this the problem?

Hope this helps

Post your log to http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html,
http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showforum=7, or other appropriate
forums for expert analysis, not here.

Hi nass

BTW. how did you unistall your ZA firewall, did you just delete the folder
in windows explorer or you used the unwise.exe that came with it or
add/remove from the control panel?.
If all else fail see the HijackThis forum, yes I know that red hat is
reputable website and they didn't create or design the site.

Please let us know your findings.

Hi nass

Sorry for the delay - was away for the past 2 days!

After running winsock, its now resolved thanks to your efforts.

It wasn't the router or the ZA removal (because it is still running on
1 PC until I remove) and I used the ZA uninstall and then removed other
non-shared files as instructed elsewhere.

Thanks so much again. Really appreciated.
