Umlaut (diacritic) - How to Remove and replace properly

I have a document, now in Word, which had been in pdf. In transfering, the
umlaut in many, many, way to many names (maybe 75 names) lost proper
positioning. I need to know how to remove all umlaut marks (..) and how to
replace the letters with umlauts properly above them.

As you have now realised, conversion from PDF is a hit or miss process. The
resulting document will usually need a lot of editing to get it back to a
resemblance of the original document. As for the umlaut, how is the umlaut
misplaced? Is it still part of the letter or a separate character? Select it
(and its associated letter if separate) and paste into the find what box of
the replace function. Put the correct character in the replace with box.

If that doesn't work, send me a short sample displaying the problem, to the
link on my web site.
