i have a umax astra2000u/p scanner I can not use with my
windows 2000. I had windows 98 but it crashed so
frequently that I had windows 2000 installed. I am hoping
someone can help me fix something where I can get my
computer to read that I have a scanner. Ihave been to
umax and downloaded drivers and have installed with the cd
I had the program 5 times - to no avail. Please advise

Frank, I'm not sure this will help but it's worth a try:

I have a UMAX Astra 1200S flatbed, which I suspect is older than your
2000u/p. It works very well on W2k, and did on NT4 too.

As I recall, Umax ships a SCSI card with its scanners. I never use it;
Umax tends not to provide drivers for such cards for newer OSes.

I have an old Adaptec 2940 SCSI card for the scanner. Adaptec is very
good about providing drivers for old cards on new systems. The driver I
use for that card is downloadable. That card cost about $10 at my local
small repair/used gear shop.

The Umax scanner driver itself, at least for the 1200S, doesn't care
what flavor of SCSI card you use.

FWIW, I use MS Photo Editor (part of the MS Office suite) to invoke the
scanner and save scanned images in the format JPEG/TIFF etc) and
location I choose. It's quick and simple. High resolution TIFF is
required by a number of OCR packages.
