Typwr Ribbon Dot Matrix Printer

V

vjp2.at

I'm curious if anyone still manufactures a simple, easy-to-repair, rugged
dot-matrix serial-interface (only pins 2,3,8,20 on DB25) printer which uses
ordinary spool typewriter ribbon. Plain ASCII, no graphics, no fonts, no PDF.

I used to have an Oki m82a for twelve years and I kick myself I ever threw
it away. I even used "film" ribbons on it, which were actually not
recommended.

I got my inkjet down to injecting one dollar's worth of ink into a twenty
five dollar cartridge, but when I hear the manufacturer suing ink
manufacturers for infringement, I want to get away from them altogether. I
can't honestly believe people aren't upset being ripped off for ink on a
printer they paid next to nothing for. I mean, if I want fancy printing, I go
to Kinko or something. I'm even looking for a service (Kinko comes close) I
can send large print jobs to by net. It was cool when I could do this on
CompuServe before Anerdica OffLine ruined them.

If Negroponte got to manufacturing a windup laptop for third world
students, I can't imagine there isn't also a need for "appropriate
technology" in printers.

Google is your friend. Have you tried it?

Also check out Okidata.

Okidata, Epson and Lexmark still make them but you will never find them
in a normal computer store. A friendly small mom & pop operation can
however, order them from their local computer wholesaler.
You might be able to buy one from POS suppliers as they are the major
purchaser of them.

Price does seem to be a major factor here: the cheaper the printer, the more people seem to moan about how much they have to pay for ink. By knocking out printers at ridiculously low prices the manufacturers are giving people unreasonable expectations as to the total cost of ownership of their printers.

[snip]

Those lawsuit is mostly baseless. A majority of ink refill kit may
contain copyrighted name or design of the ink carts but the ink and
refillers don't contain anything propierty and won't infringe. The
3rd party ink carts you see for $5 to $10 less than OEM are really
originally OEM that was refilled and since the cart itself is original
and not reproduction, nothing is infringed.
