typed characters are not displayed/other character set is displaye

I have typed in word numerous times. However I'm hitting some combination of
keys that changes the letter set. This may be windows, because this also has
happened to me on messenger. I'm running Windows XP.
I can type an entire document and at some point I hit other keys and the
entire character set is messed up. I have to restart my machine. I don't
know what combination of keys, but I'd like to know if I could correct it
without restarting my computer.

The problem may be this:
You may by incident have hit the Alt+Shift keys (without pressing any
additional keys). If you have defined more than one keyboard layout, the
Alt+Shift key combination switches between the different keyboard layouts.
Press Alt+Shift again until the keyboard works correctly.

To change the list of keyboard layouts, go to Control Panel > Regional and
Language Options > Language tab and click the Details button.
