I had WinXP Pro crash on me (don't ask me why), so I reinstalled it and
since I had the opportunity I used PowerQuest PartitionMagic to breakdown my
C: Drive into C: & D:, but in the process of doing that I lost power to the
system (again, don't ask me why).
I thought no big deal I'll just reinstall WinXP Pro again. I was totally
successful in doing it, successful in splitting my drive into 2, and got all
my programs loaded just fine.
However, whenever I do a power off/on reboot of my system I get a start up
screen as if I had 2 operating systems, the only difference is I don't! But
I get two choices of "Microsoft Windows XP Professional". The first works
just great, but the second one obviously left over from my first aborted
attempt and doesn't work at all.
When I try booting from the second one I get the following msg:
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<windows root>\system32\hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the above file" . And then the system freezes.
And if I were to go into debugging mode, using the F8 key, I get the same
statement.
Is there any way I can get rid of the second operating system choice? It's
just a nuisance and doesn't cause any problems, but I sure would like to get
rid of it.
