Two Newbie Questions

Hi all...

I've got a couple of newbie-style questions that I'd appreciate any
help with.

Firstly - when using firewire/IEEE1394/i-Link should the PC recognise
the camera (Sony DCR-TRV33E) in the same style as a USB connection?
I'm getting the same non-recognition problems as others have asked
about here, and have followed some of the troubleshooting tips such as
those on Graham's pages at myvideoproblems.com, but everything seems to
be working fine within Windows (XP Pro SP2). I've opened the firewire
port within Windows Firewall (even though I've got the whole thing
turned off anyway), checked that the firewire card is working OK under
device manager etc. I'm just not sure what is supposed to happen when
I plug the samera in. Should the same type of "hey, I've detected a
new device" popup appear?

I have no other firewire devices so I'm struggling to think of how to
test it some other way.

Also, when using a DV camera as a webcam, is there any way to also get
sound across a USB connection? MSN Messenger gets the video OK, but
seems to be insisting on capturing audio via a separate feed (like a
standard mike etc). I know there are programs that let you use the
camera as a webcam which include audio, but they all use the firewire
which the above point negates! :)

Thanks for reading...

Justin, yes you should get a new hardware found wizard open up.
Have you checked out the cannot capture page, which runs through lots of
testing ideas, to work out if any of the components are in fact faulty? It
may well mean going on a beg, steal or borrow mission!!!
I've never used my dv cam as a web cam, so can't answer that one without
researching it and I'm afraid I'm busy working at the moment.

Hi Graham - thanks for the response. I actually worked it out last
night! I only got my new PC last week, and assumed that the firewire
port at the front was the one to use. When I looked around last night
though I found another at the back which works fine. Seems the front
port is to the video card and is not enabled. So all's well!

On behalf of all other newbies that might be lurking around, much
thanks to you and other regulars on here that spend so much time
helping out. Very much appreciated...
