Two Indexes in One Document

Hi ~D~

When you're marking entries by inserting XE fields, add an \f switch
in each field code, followed by an identifier. This entry will be
picked up by an INDEX field containing an \f switch with the same
identifier. (This is explained in the Help topics about XE fields and
INDEX fields.)

Unfortunately, you can't do anything in the Mark Index Entry dialog to
make it insert the switch. You have to do it manually in each field
code after it's inserted.

An example may clarify this. Suppose you have the following marked
passage:

The quick brown fox{XE "brown" \f a} jumps over
the lazy dog{XE "dog" \f b}.

Then you insert the following index fields at the end of the document:

-- index a --
{INDEX \c "2" \f a}
-- index b --
{INDEX \c "2" \f b}

When the fields are updated, the results will be

-- index a --
fox, 1
-- index b --
dog, 1

As the Help topic mentions, the default identifier (the one that's
used if there is no \f switch) is 'i'.

Thank you so much Jay..I never got the switches figured out. Can you
reccommend a book or a site that will explain all and how they work?

Thanks again!

Besides the Word Help system, try some of these references:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=/support/word/usage/fields/default.asp
http://www.addbalance.com/usersguide/fields.htm
http://www.byteryte.nl/html/word_q_a.html

I don't often read books about Word -- that's too much like work <g>.
I can tell you that "Special Edition Using Office XP" doesn't say much
about it, because the authors have such a low opinion of the entire
index feature in Word -- they recommend using Quark Express or
something else that can read Word files and make a "real" index.
