Do I have to build two domain controllers for redundancy at every site, or can I have the forest root be the redundant DC for the child domains? Is this automatic

You need to have two Domain Controllers for secure redundance in each site,
for each site by my advice. This depends on how much you truest the link
between your sites as well.

Also you need to consider your operation master roles, if you dont setup
correctly then you will start to have update issues because the GC is not
interogated properly..

True, If you have Exchange, you should place the FMSO roles RID and PDC in
same site as the exchange server.

Try it out self on low bandwidth links :) Exchange talks more to the holder
of this roles than other Domain Controllers.

Sorry I didn't clarify earlier, I was talking specifically about the
Infrastructure Role, if it is hosted on a DC that has a GC it will never
update correctly when changes are made on other domains, if I understand its
a standard warning issued by MS.
How I do this is leave all roles on the 1st dc of a domain and by default
its also a GC, create 2nd DC and move the Infrastructure Role to the 2nd DC.

Comments welcome
