Two Copies of mrt.exe?

A little while back, one of the Windows Updates contained a download for
the Malicious Software Removal Tool (mrt.exe), so I downloaded it,
along with the rest of that month's batch.

Since I thought I had that already, I did a search and found it in two
different places:

1.) Where it's supposed to be:
C:\WINDOWS\system32
Size - 15,876 KB
Date Created - 5/15/2005
Date Modified - 6/28/2007

2.) AND I ALSO found it in:
C:\c6f23b84c9e (etc., etc. - a long string of (seemingly) random numbers and letters)
Size - 14,620 KB
Date Created - 5/9/2007
Date Modified - 4/27/2007

I looked everywhere on the net and from everything I could find,
it's supposed to be in C:\WINDOWS\system32

NO mention is made anywhere of it being anywhere else.

Does anybody have an idea what that '2nd' copy in that random folder is --
and whether I can delete it or not?

Thanks in advance,

Mike_____

Correct. The folder C:\c6f23b84c9e... is a remainder and can be deleted.

fdisk and format and reinstall

A remainder of what? I have a folder with a name like C:\c6f23b84c9e...
too. Can these always be safely deleted?

A remainder of the installation, usually deleted after running that tool.
Download that tool from this site and start the executable file (test):
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FamilyID=ad724ae0-e72d-4f54-9ab3-75b8eb148356

While running, you'll find a folder with a similar name in the root
directory of the drive with the most free capacity.

Usually, yes.

Thanks Detlev - I really appreciate the info.
