twain driver

Using Windows XP SP1,Epson 1260 scanner. Everything has worked fine for
several months, then today Epson Smart Panel wouldn't recognize the twain
driver. I uninstalled/reinstalled Epson twain 4 times, even trying earlier
versions, but neither Smart Panel or any app that uses twain can open the
driver. I found the Q814995 patch on windows update that refered to a
problem after installing the hotfix Q328310, and following the procedure,
removed all scanner software and twain drivers, installed the Q814995 patch,
reinstalled the software and twain ... nothing. Did that 3 times, each time
cleaning the registry as well ... no change! The scanner works with the
windows scanner and camera wizard, cause it doesn't use twain, so I know the
hardware and connections aren't the issue. And of course, Epson tech support
won't answer! Help!! .... I'm losing hair on this one!

A semi-random suggestion:

Disconnect the scanner (USB) from the PC, first.

Uninstall the drivers.

Reboot.

Re-install the drivers.

Plug in the scanner (USB).

(Pray to the deity of your choice - optional.)

Cheer as the scannert is detected/installed.

You may already have tried this several times, but if not...

Good luck.
