Anyone know if the TV quality of the 9800 pro is any better than the 9700
pro? I have the 9700 pro and find the tv quality a bit fuzzy/blurry.
Thanks in advance.

There is no difference between the boards that would improve the quality
of an image displayed on a television. If it is not a HD television
connected via the DVI or component inputs then the signalling method
it uses is not able to transfer resolutions anywhere close to
what the cheapest purpose-made computer monitor on the market can
display. My 9800 is needle-sharp on my HD projector.

Thanks. I should clarify that I meant the quality of the image that's
produced by the card's built-in TV tuner. I find the tuner produces a
blurry image. So I'm wondering if in that regard the 9800 pro is any better
than the 9700 pro.

Are you talking about All-in-wonders? Is the image "blurry" when
displayed on a TV? Or compared to another tuner board that you have
used?

Yes the 9700 pro AIW series (I should have said that before, sorry). When I
watch TV using my 9700 Pro AIW (hooked up to my 17" Eizo monitor), the TV
image produced by the card is a tad blurry (while when I don't watch TV, the
image from my 9700 Pro AIW is great---perfect focus etc). I'm wondering if
the 9700 Pro AIW has a focus/sharpness adjustment or something...

(I don't have another tuner board, so I can't compare)

SD TV is not going to be as sharp as a computer-generated image. It's
resolution is less than standard VGA and the line count doesn't scale
exactly to any standard PC resolution, so the result is a fuzzy image.
The question is whether the image you're seeing is unusually fuzzy or
not, and the only way to tell for sure is to compare it with something
else.

All the 9000 series AIWs use the same decoder chip so there's not much
real difference between them from a TV viewpoint unless your board is
defective in some manner.

There's not much you can do to improve the TV display with an AIW--if
you want to get a board based on the BT8X8 series or one of the newer
Phillips or Conexant chips you can use Dscaler which may help a good
deal--these boards are not necessarily expensive--newegg has a well
regarded Phillips SSA7133 based board, the Compro Videomate Gold Plus,
for under$60 with remote. Another good, if more expensive ($160),
option would be the Dvico Fusion HDTV in one of its variants--they have
BT8X8 chips that can be used by Dscaler to display SD television and can
also receive and on a fast enough machine decode HD.

On the other hand, going to any of these third-party solutions you lose
the transparent video, which I do miss.

(snip)...

Great info, thanks. I may look into getting another (better) TV card, as
you suggested.
