TV Media Display Adware

I have 4 profiles on my XP PC. When one of the profiles logs on then logs
off, the next profile that logs on will get a notification from Microsoft
Anti-Spy-ware that TV Media Display Adware is trying to install.

I remove it and even run a full anti-spyware scan, and the scan comes back
clean.

But if that one profile logs on again and then logs off, the next profile
that logs on will get the Anti-spyware warning again.

The Microsoft Anti-Spyware version is up to date.

Help!!!

The above URL is for Windows Defender--this is the new name for Microsoft
Antispyware--and is the long awaited beta2.

I'd suggest that you download and run--it will upgrade the version in
place--and see whether this deals with this issue better--either by a more
complete removal, or perhaps there's some multiple user issue involved
here--this version does much better in that area.

After I download it and try to install, I get a message that says: THIS
INSTALLATION PACKAGE COULD NOT BE OPENED. CONTACT THE APPLICATION VENDOR TO
VERIFY THAT THIS IS A VALID WINDOWS INSTALLER PACKAGE.

1) is the package named: windowsdefender.msi?
2) check add or remove programs to see whether the Windows Installer 3.1 is
listed near the end of the list. If not, go to Windows Update and apply
that and all other missing critical security patches, and retry the install.

Are you on Service Pack 2 for XP, or Windows 2000, SP 4?

1) The package is named windowsdefender.msi
2) Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803) is installed

I'm running XP SP2. I e-mailed (e-mail address removed) and they replied that
since windows defender was still beta, I couldn't receive any tech support,
so they referred me to the discussion groups.

Dan - I've another reply from another user who got a similar error in
attempting to install. He downloaded 4 times, I think, and, comparing the
results later, found that each file was a different size, and all were
smaller than a successful download which he did via a different route.

So--consider trying this:

1) do a new download from the original URL I posted.
2) do another one via, say, majorgeeks or www.filehippo.com both of which
have links to the current Windows Defender version.

3) compare the sizes of the files that result from these downloads. If they
are the same, pick one and try the install. If they are different, record
the size and date, and try the larger one.

Let us know what happens?

Well, something interesting happened today. I went to Tools > Windows Update
from Internet Explorer (something I do weekly) and checked for High Priority
updates. I was told that I needed to download and install Windows Genuine
Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130). So I did.

Then I went back to your original link, downloaded windowsdefender.msi, and
it downloaded and installed correctly. I updated the definitions and
performed a quick scan, everything appears to be OK at this point.

I'm not sure why I needed to download the Windows Genuine Advantage
Validation Tool. As I said previously, I check weekly for high priority
updates. Last Friday I wasn't prompted to download it ... go figure.

Back to my original post ... I'll monitor the situation and see if I get
warned that TV MEDIA is attempting to install.

Will advise.

We've had a similar update in the past (about 7 months ago) from the update
site. I assumed that this was an update of that.

There was a rev to the Windows Genuine Advantage tool on March the 1st.
So--everyone visiting WindowsUpdate or MicrosoftUpdate on March 1st or
later, will be getting the new version of the control.

I'm glad that worked--but I've no inside knowledge about why!

Everything appears to be working fine. When I scan, defender is finding a
few things occasionally, but TV MEDIA is not one of them. I'm glad the new
version is out. It will only get better as we go forward.

This thread has been the only one related to TV Media Display. I have
Defender and I have received an error "failed, 0x80508017. An unexpected
problem occurred. install any available updates for the program and restart
the computer in safe mode and then try again."

I have seen this before and tried starting in Safe Mode. Defender however
will not run because of dependancy problems. I tried to start appropriate
services but didn't find anything that worked.

I have all necessary updates on Windows 2000 SP4 including defender updates.

What are the next steps to remove the failed issue with TV Media Display?

OK - I've been unable to run Windows Defender in safe mode under Windows
2000 as well.

The next step I'd take would be:

Go to the System events log, and filter on source WinDefend. recall the
time of a scan which detected TV Media. Go back to that time in the log,
and look for yellow triangle events involving that detection. Open the
events and, perhaps, cut and paste the content to this thread.

Basically--you should find System Events log entries for each detection,
giving complete path and file details for each item detected. Using that
info, we can probably determine the reason for this error, and the
appropriate action to take to remove the detected item. Possibilities
include the item being in a SR restore point, Antivirus quarantine, an
archive file of some sort, and probably others.

Thanks Bill. I didn't find what I was looking for. TV Media didn't show.
Not sure why. No matter.

Some of these dialog boxes remind us that this app is still in beta, still
changing. Behavior for archive files is changing, and the dialog boxes
should mostly either become more informative, or appear less
frequently--i.e. they'll be last resort--as the beta progresses.
