Turning Off Print Preview when PDF - ing?

Fellow Forum Members,
Thanks to the trick Bear taught me, I was able to get all 450 of my Figure
Cross References converted to BOLD, BLUE ARIAL 10 point links with very
little effort. All my cross references now stand out in the manual as being
hot links, which I think is cool.

The problem I'm now having is that when I convert to PDF the conversion
process does a PRINT PREVIEW and all of my cross references convert back to
their original state which is black. Print Preview does this and what I need
to know is if there is any way to turn off the PRINT PREVIEW in the PDF
conversion process so that all my Figure cross references can remain bold and
blue and convert back to black? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello Binar:

I cannot reproduce your problem. Once I apply formatting to a field, no
matter how I do it, it stays put. So I'm sort of guessing about what's
happening to you. But I think that the problem is not Print Preview, but the
fact that your fields are being updated, and the update is clearing away the
formatting.

If you select one of your cross-reference fields in Normal view then press
F9, does the formatting disappear? If so then it is the update that's the
problem.

You can try to prevent the update for the purposes of printing using either
of these approaches. I don't know if the first will work, but the second
works to prevent content changes I made in a field in my document.

1. Click Tools > Options > Print and clear the Update Fields check box.

2. Select the entire document (Ctrl+A) and lock the fields (Ctrl+F11) to
print. After printing, select the entire document and unlock the fields again
(Ctrl+Shift+F11).

Tools>Options>Print and uncheck the Update Fields box. Or, use Ctrl+A to
select everything in the document and then press Ctrl+Shift+F9 of unlink the
fields in the document.

Thanks Bear and Doug for the help. Let me elaborate. First, I have Acrobat
Pro 7 installed. I have changed all my cross refernces to bold blue and when
I hit Alt F9 all of the REFs Fields in Brackets display as bold blue. When I
hit Alt F9 again all of my Cross References (i.e. FIGURE 3-16) display in
blue. My Update Fields check box is not checked. Nevertheless, when I
publish a PDF the conversion process updates the fields and converts all of
them to black. The PDF that gets published does not display bold blue cross
references, but they are still linked. If I hit Ctrl+Shift+F9 to kill all the
links the PDF that gets published displays bold blue cross references but
they are no longer linked.

It seems that maintaining BLUE BOLD Cross Reference Links in a Word
converted to PDF document is not possible. The PDF conversion process
refreshes the cross reference links and converts them to black. If anyone out
there can duplicate this problem I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Binar

Bear,
Thanks a lot. It's my fault, I didn't follow your instructions exactly.
Cntrl + F11 does indeed lock all the fields and prevents the PDF conversion
process from changing bac to black the bold blue styles I applied to all the
cross references. This solves the problem. Thanks a lot for the help.
