Turning off compacting in OE

I am running XP Home Edition SP2 and updates. Every 100 th time I open and
close OE it begins compacting my files. I always panic and power down. this
has resulted in loss of a lot of my mail messages. I want to disable
compacting and not perform it after opening and closing OE 100 times. I
manage my mail and do not need to compact it. I have some messages that I
want to keep for a long period of time from my children etc.

Please help me to turn off the compacting.
