Turning off auto schedule scans

I am running Microsoft AntiSpyware Version: 1.0.501. Each time I turn off and disable the auto scan, this version just ignores it. It reverts to its default 2 A.M. setting. Will updating to the most current version solve this? Can I install the latest version on top of the one already installed or should I un-install first?

I'm not sure that updating will cure this, but you can update by just running the new download--it will upgrade.
