Turning off Active Directory on Win2k

We use Samba 2.0 to provide an NT domain controller on our
networks to accommodate a few NT4 machines that require it
(the rest run Linux).

We would like to add one Win2k machine but I can't add the
machine account from this to the domain because it expects
SRV records on the DNS server, which of course aren't
there.

Is there any way of forcing this Win2k machine to work with
the "NT domain", i.e. so that doesn't need the SRV records?

Sorry, this is nonsense. A w2k client doesn't expect any SRV records
to work There is no problem to add a w2k client to a NT/SAMBA 2.0
domain.
AD needs SRV records, that's correct. But you're not talking about
integration of an w2k DC in a NT/SAMBA domain, are you? This is
impossible by any means.

Do you have added the machine account in SAMBA or not? You will not be
able to add a NT/2000/XP client from that very client (using the GUI
like MS wants you to do).

Is the client able to access a share on SAMBA?
NET USE ? \\server\share * /user:domname\username
at the command prompt.

No.. :)

Aaaah.. the oldest mistake in the book... expecting the MS
software to work! Yes, that's what we were doing... :-(

Yes, there's no problem with the connectivity. Thanks for
the pointer about the GUI not working, that helps a lot.

We were looking at the broadcast IP traffic from the W2k
client and saw these strange SRV lookups. Obviously, they
didn't come from the Linux workstations!

RTFM. This is a SAMBA limitation.

So what? It will work. You misinterpreted the data and used false
assumptions. Don't blame MS. Read your mans.
