Turned on scanner several times while locked

I pulled a bone-headed move. I powered on my newly purchased Epson 4990
scanner several times. It was making a loud clicking noise. I thought it
was broken because I knew I unlocked the scanner itself, but turns out,
the transparency unit was still locked (I inadverently relocked it after
initially unlocking it)

Did I do any long-term damage?

I'm returning the thing. The sound was clearly gears grinding. Would it
kill epson to put an electrical kill switch when locked? Cripes.

Happened to me as well -- more than once. I knew about the lock, I'm
just a bit dense at times.

I can't really be sure, but it doesn't seem to have caused any damage to
my scanner. Sure, the noise it made while running locked wasn't nice to
hear. Yes, they could definitely put an electric lock on the lock.
