Turn off Windows Messenger for good?

Win XP Pro

Everytime I boot up I get the Windows Messenger icon with the little x
that says I'm not signed in.

I have gone to the options in Messenger and unchecked all the boxes that
tell it to connect.

I have also gone into MSConfig and unchecked it.

Nevertheless, there it is on my taskbar at startup.

How do I really turn it off?

Thanks - but - I really hate using programs to do something
I'd rather understand and do by hand. I can always undo it
that way and I know what I'[ve done. I'm comfortable
editing the registry and would rather do so myself.

Do you happen to know exactly what this program does?
