I have recently replaced our desktop system with a HP with
Windows XP. I also purchased a Linksys wireless router
(as recommended by our DSL provider) and two wireless
adapters for each of one our laptops (a Dell 8100 and a
Toshiba Satelilite) both using XP as well. Our network is
configured with the HP desktop connected to one of four
wired inputs to the router and one wireless adapter plugs
into each laptop for a total of three computers connected
to the network, two connected wirelessly.
We are able to share our single DSL internet connection
across all three systems for the first time ever. This is
a great convenience. I am trying to also to take
advantage of the file and printer sharing capabilities
that Windows XP allows but so far have not been able to do
so. All computers have been configured to be on the same
workgroup (Miller), and also have the "guest" account
activated. All systems are using XP Home Edition. Here are
some of the symptoms and error messages:
1) When "View workgroup computers" is selected from
the "Network Connections" on either laptop an error
message appears saying: "Miller is not accessible. You
might not have permission to use this resource. Contact
system.."
2) Workgroup computers are visible on the desktop
when "View workgroup computers" is selected from
the "Network Connections" but when right-clicked for the
properties an error is given that says : "The server
<nameofserver> could not be found on the network." Yet the
icon shows up under "View workgroup computers".
3)On each computer on the local "share Documents" folder
appears. No share resources appear to any of computer
from another other computer.
Somehow the computers can share the internet connection
fine but are not able to become accessible to each other.
I do not know how to make the workgroup (Miller) and each
computer as a server be available to each other. Can this
be fixed?
Thank you,
Chris
