TRYING TO REMOVE PROGRAMS

R

Ramesh [MVP]

The install.log/uninstall.log usually contains the uninstallation information about a program. When you remove a program from Add/Remove Programs, the log files come into play and remove the corresponding software entries from the registry and the files in the hard disk.

If the LOG files are missing, you may need to reinstall the application again (in the same path) and then try a clean uninstall again. In some cases, the application might be removed, but the entries may still exist in the Add/Remove Programs applet. Orphaned entries are usually a result of a system restore rollback operation.

One of my all time gripes about some of the "clean-up" programs is that
they list uninstall and install logs as "unnecessary files" and recommend
their deletion. Following that advice is often the cause of users finding
themselves in the OP's position - unable to uninstall, upgrade or reinstall
a particular program. I wish the folks that put out these program's would
rethink that recommendation or at least provide more information to the
user about possible ramifications.

Thanks, Sharon. But, the software mentioned in the note caused no problems for me so far. I too agree that some cleanup programs cause damage to the files/registry and turnout to be a problem. Y'day Kelly told she had some feedback that the software in the 'note' created problems [deleted the Accessories list in Start Menu]. I will test it with v4.0 and add a note to my page if necessary.

Sorry, Ramesh. Must not have been clear in what I wrote. I wasn't referring
to any particular program. Just ranting in general about cleanup programs
that induce users to delete those files. :)
