Here's the story so far......they lost me with the comment pertaining to the
CS and the plug furthest from the motherboard.......didn't seem to clear to
me. Any help would be greatly appreciated....you can read about my case below!
In Cable Select (CS) the single drive needs connecting to the plug
furthest from the motherboard

Yes, and Mike - when you see the prompt "boot from cd-rom", are you
hitting "enter"? You probably need to in order to boot from the XP cd.
If you don't hit "enter", the next boot device in line is apparently
your hard drive and since there are no boot files on it (yet), you get
the error.

The "plug furtherest from the motherboard" is referring to the flat ribbon
hard drive data cable. Assuming it is the 80 conductor cable used these days
(40 of them used for shielding and the other 40 for data), the blue
connector plugs into the IDE port on the motherboard, the middle connector
(since you apparently only have one drive being used on that IDE port) is
not used, and the connector furtherest from the motherboard is the one that
should be plugged into the hard drive. Make sure you plug it in correctly.
The side of the ribbon cable with the red stripe goes to pin no. 1.

As to CS (cable select), that refers to the hard drive jumper setting. On
most hard drives, the little removable jumper is located between the power
connector and the data connector. Refer to your hard drive manual for the
jumper settings. Also, many hard drives have the jumper settings printed on
the hard drive case.

I'm not sure what's going on anymore with the startup. I set the 1st and 2nd
boots in BIOS to the CD-ROM and the HD00......when i turn my computer
completely off and back on.....this message comes up:

INF file txtsetup.sif is corrupt or missing, status 32768.
Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit.

and when the computer starts to load....i says use the DISK.......i guess
for Windows.......

thanks if ou can help with anything.......

OK, it's time for some more hardware testing. You've got a new hard
drive, but how old is the machine itself? Test the RAM and the
motherboard. There is a new version of Memtest86 to use for RAM
testing. Get it at www.memtest.org and make either a bootable cd or
floppy. If you can't boot with either item, then there may very well be
something wrong with your motherboard. You can test the m/b with
something like TuffTest, but you may just want to take the machine to a
good local shop (not a BestBuy or CompUSA type of store) for diagnosis.

Good luck,

Malke
