Troubleshooting overheating/hardware failure

Hey , so I come home from work to find my computer room filled with
nauseating chemical smell. I turn on my monitor and low and behold
no signal. I reboot and get crazy image tears and symbols and
screwed up bios screen and a crash. I let the system cool down an
boot up with the cover off and fan blowing on it.

checked cpu temp and mb temp and they seem to be in the 30's.
then used sandra and found out that the power supply is reading 126
. It doesnt feel hot and the air blowing from it is cool. The fan i
working properly so i'm guessing that maybe the probe is screwed
Anyways what could be causing all these problems? The voltage seem
to be stable as well. I'm considering replacing the psu. Could ther
have been a minor short on the MB ? Thanks

Looked at the capacitors on the mobo? Any with tops missing, open,
bulging or lifted? Gunk around their bases? They have electrolyte in
them which can pong a bit, if released. You can buy replacement
capacitors and they are some of the easiest components on a mobo to
unsolder and re-solder new ones. You cna even get kits of replacement
capacitors.

Temperature reports do rely on matching hardware to software - if the
software wan't intended for that hardware, strange results can appear.

Where can i buy capacitors for my computer, ive looked around on
digikey and other places, and i can't find the exact ones that i need.
im looking for a 1000uF, 6.3V, KZG series radial electrolytic capacitor.

I checked and their isn't any capacitors that looked fubared. I di
however run sisoft sandra environment monitor and it is showing th
power supplies 12v running at around 11.35 volts , is this normal o
is that a sign that the power supply is done for

www.mouser.com sells Nichicon and I believe Chemicon.
www.bdent.com sells Sanyo, among others.

You don't need the exact same type so long as you get something with
ESR about low as the originals or lower, the capacitance is -20% + 50%,
and the diameter is the same or slightly smaller. IOW Panasonic FM
(DIgikey has them) should be OK as well. Height doesn't seem to matter
nearly as much, but check anyway. 12mm diameter is very easy to find,
10mm is harder, and 8mm in larger capacitances can be almost impossible
to find.

Lots of capacitor information can be found at www.badcaps.net. They
also sell good caps.

I'd say that power supply is out of spec, if the reading is accurate.
HOWEVER, it's likely that the reading isn't accurate. So it really doesn't
mean anything. -Dave
