Troubleshoot pointer options in PowerPoint?

When I right-click my mouse on pointer options in my slideshow, and select
either the pen or the highlighter, the pen or the highlighter does not appear
on screen and it will not let me draw on the slides. It just advances the
slides. However, this highlighter function was working fine the other day
and I don't know what I did to mess it up. Any assistance would be greatly
appreciated.
