troubleshoot- open a word document attached in an email

For the past couple of weeks, when I attempt to open Word documents that are
attached to an email, I get an error message. Top (dark gray) labeled:
MediaFACE 4.01. Error message: Could not open project 'C:\DOCUME~1...rest of
name of word document. I have Word 2000. Currently project trying to open
is one that I sent as an attachment. It was drafted and sent back to me by 2
different parties. I cannot open it from either email.
 
There could be a number of problems. The first one is that the version of
Word that you have is an older format than the version in which is was
created. Try that and see if it helps.
