Troubles with Windows XP

G

Guest

I built a new PC, and I'm trying to put XP home on it with the upgrade
version. I've installed my old windows 98 on there but its not detecting my
200 GB hard drive. It only shows that i have 2GB in total disk space so I
can't upgrade to Windows XP cause I dont have enough disk space. I've tried
to by pass and just install the Windows XP disk in boot up but it always says
that it can not detect a hard disk drive. My bios is detecting the hard
drive. Can anyone help. Thank you

I presume you have done the basic stuff like set the jumpers correctly on the
200GB drive?

It could be that you need to flash the bios if you havent already done so.
Check the mobo manufacturers' website - some may not support hdd of this size.

How did you partition and format it? _W98_ should have recognized it as at
least bigger than 2GB.

My recommendation would be to dump W98: Install WXP from its CD, delete all
partitions etc...

How do i delete W98? Everytime I go to install XP from the upgrade CD it
still doesn't detect a HD

When using FDISK and FORMAT from a Win 98 boot diskette, you have to select
LBA otherwise you will only get a maximum partition of 2gb (all that MSDOS
supports)..

Go to this website..

http://michaelstevenstech.com/

Michael covers all exits, and at the end of the procedure, you should have a
working installation..

Good luck..

If this helps, im using a GIGABYTE "GA-8I915P Duo(REV 1.1)" i915P Chipset
Motherboard. I dont have any SATA cables hooked up because I dont know what
they are for and I dont know anything about RAID

You said that the hdd is showing in the BIOS / POST correctly.

Try formatting the 200GB hdd using the manufacturers utility (ie Maxtor, WD,
Seagate, etc). It should be in the form of a bootable floppy or bootable
cdrom. Remove any slave drive first and set the jumper accordingly.

Then install WinXP w/SP1 or SP2.

Hi,

For your reference,

I'll suggest you to remove the original HD (with Win 98) and put on the new
HD for the Windows installation.

During the initial boot, go to BIOS settings and verify if it has been
detected correctly and as the primary HD on the first IDE.

You mentioned about SATA and RAID. Refer to your MB menu and go to BIOS IDE
configuration section, and make sure - SATA as RAID is set to "NO" and
native mode is "SATA + PATA" or "PATA".

Hope this helps and good luck.

This helped alot, it loaded some new hardware, but I dont know what it
loaded. My HD is still only 2GB though. Should the PATA IDE be set to Ch.1
Master/Slave or Ch.2 Master/Slave. I have no idea what Ch1. or Ch2. Mean

Hi,

If you have only one IDE HD and it's should be listed in the BIOS HD
detection as the first master and the rest of them should be empty. Make
sure to set everything to "Auto" for the HD's setting (unless your HD vendor
provides other instructions) and disable 32-bit transfer mode for the time
being. In general, put everything to the default values.

Do you mean that your BIOS can only see it as 2GB? If so, your BIOS may
have problem and you have to contact MB vendor for addressing that issue
first.

Good luck.

My Operating System can only see it as 2GB. Something to do with partitions.
I have a second HD set as slave.

Sorry, i meant to ask, should the PATA IDE be set to Ch.1 Master/Slave or
Ch.0 Master/Slave. Thanks

Hi,

I was under the assumption that you wish to install Windows on the brand new
HD and if that's the case, I suggest you to put on ONLY the new HD and do
the installation to avoid any possible confusions either from BIOS or
Windows installation.

If the physical connection has been set correctly as well as for the BIOS
settings, your new HD should be identified as CH0 Master. PS: This again is
under the assumption that you're using IDE HD and connected to MB's IDE
port.

Hope this helps.

REMOVE THE 10 GIG, Set the jumpers on the 200 gig to
Master.....................Now,
Put your Windows 98 floppy boot disk in the floppy drive, boot to it, Run
Fdisk, delete any and all partitions on thge 200 gig, Now, Insert the XP CD,
boot with it and do a new installation. It will find the 200 and format it
in the proper fashion (NTFS File System).
Good Luck

Does the Windows XP CD include at least SP1? If not it won't see all of the
200 GB drive. If the CD has at least SP1 then follow LawrenceSystems advice.

Skip installing Win 98. During the XP installation, it will ask for the Win
98 disk, which you insert into your disk drive. That is all you need to
install the upgrade. You do not need to install an OS for upgrade.
