i recently tried to upgrade from windows me to xp"home
edition". when the computer restarted during the
installation, i received the following error message:
Windows could not restart because the following file is
missing or corrupt:
<windowsroot>\system32\hal.dll.

after recieving this message i referred to MS KB 320252
and followed the instructions. however, i do not have a
cancel windows setup option listed in the windows advanced
options. when i tried using a startup disc and typing sys
c: at the command prompt, it says bad command or file name.

is there perhaps another way to uninstall xp and start
over?

There are two ways of installing XP - a clean install where the hard
drive is formatted first and an upgrade install where the new operating
system is installed "on top" of the old operating system. If you are
doing the latter, try a clean install instead. Formatting the drive
will wipe all current data, so you would expect to reinstall programs
from cd and restore data from backups. If you are already doing a clean
install and the installation is failing, you probably have bad
hardware. Start with a RAM test - I like Memtest86 from
www.memtest86.com - and let the test run for an extended time, like
overnight (unless you get errors immediately). If the RAM is good, then
run a hard drive diagnostic utility, which you can get from the drive
mftr.'s website.

two ways
get a boot disk 98 preffred start with that and if you
have converted ur hard drive to Ntfs you have to use fdisk
and delete the partitions then create new partitions....
then start with like windows 98 if u have the disk....

2. Boot from the windows XP upgrade cd... and do a clean
install.... During the process it will ask you to insert a
windows 98 or 95 disk......

If you want to upgrade your previous WinXP Home Edition into WinXP Pro., but there are some errors, The best way to solve the problem
1. Try to use your winxp pro cd installer
2. Go to the bios and change the boot sequence, change it to CD-rom drive. So that next time you press the restart button
the computer boot from the cd-rom then try to follow the instruction display on the screen

That indicates that there is corruption of the boot.ini file: That
tells the boot where to look for windows components, and it is looking
in the wrong place. Hal.dll just happens to be the first file it looks
for.

Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard Disk. Boot the XP CD and, instead
of Setup, take the immediate R for Repair. Assume any password
requested is blank, and TAB over.
Give:
ATTRIB -H -R -S C:\Boot.ini
DEL C:\Boot.ini
(thus deleting the old one)
BootCfg /Rebuild
