Trouble with router free wireless

Hi, I have had trouble getting my wireless network to function properly, i
used a link on this site to get it going, and can view files on both the
desktop and laptop on each other, however I cannot get the internet
connection shared.
Both XP firewalls are off, zone alarm on host is allowing it, and on the
client laptop i even get the shared internet gateway thing come up in network
connections, and both connect recieve and send packets to each other... not
sure where exactly the problem lies, and yes my net connection is selected to
be shared, hope you can shed some light.

Please provide "ipconfig /all" from each computer, as a start. Read this

If I understand your setup:

1. The host computer connects directly to the Internet through some
type of modem connection (dial-up, DSL, cable).

2. You've enabled Internet Connection Sharing on the host computer's
modem connection.

3. You've connected the wireless router to an Ethernet adapter on the
host computer to give Internet access to the client computer.

Is that right? If so, here are some things to look at:

1. Some versions of ZoneAlarm are incompatible with Internet
Connection Sharing on the host computer. On the host, enable XP's
firewall, un-install (don't just disable) ZoneAlarm, and reboot both
computers.

2. Connect the host's Ethernet adapter to a LAN port on the router.
Don't connect anything to the WAN (Internet port) on the router.
Disable the router's built-in DHCP server.

3. Check the client's TCP/IP configuration. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1 or your ISP's DNS server

right with #1 and 2, but im not running a router, both have wireless network
adapters, and im trying to set up an adhoc pc to pc network without a router

Chuck here is the ip config from both and the pc setups are listed above
each, looked through the article you linked and mine does vary a bit but i
havent the slightest clue how to change that.

Well, what you have there looks fine. What exactly do you mean by "cannot get
the internet connection shared"? Are there things that you can do from Parfitt
that you cannot do from Chris?

From each computer:
From a command window:
1) Ping www.yahoo.com.
2) Ping 66.94.230.33.
Report success / exact text of error messages.

From your browser:
3) Browse www.yahoo.com.
4) Browse 66.94.230.33.
Report success / exact text of error messages.

Let's see exactly what does, and doesn't, work.

The first pc pings it all fine, 2nd one gets time out dns errors on all
attempts. Basically i can see all the shared folders from the laptop on the
desktop, cant access them however says theyre "inaccessable" and cannot get
any connection to the internet from the laptop and cannot see files from the
desktop on the laptop, but in network connections on the laptop pc1 shows as
an internet gateway

OK, Chris. if Parfitt can access websites that Chris can't, and Chris is the
client side of ICS, you're probably looking at an MTU issue.
