trouble with MovieMaker2

When capturing a clip from a Sony DV camera using an USB,
I don't get any sound, only video. When trying same with
a firewire, the PC suddenly doesn't recognise the camera
anymore; yet it "pings" when I take the cable out and
plug it in again. I checked the device manager, nothing
unusual there. Is there a setting somewhere that needs to
be changed so that MovieMaker2 knows that I want to
capture using a firewire connection and not an USB? Any
assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Pete

Sounds like the same problem I'm having with a JVC and Movie Maker (and also with the video editing software that came with the camcorder)! I've wasted soooo much time and torn out so much hair trying to find the problem and getting contradictory information from "experts". I'd love to know what you come up with. There is a description of something like this one the MS site: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;831693 but I'm not sure it relates as I'm not using DX9.0b . . . .

Hi Peter,

Maybe a test capture via firewire, using the free WinDV utility, will help
you assess it. There's a link to it on the Camcorders... Intro page of

Thanks Alan, the description in the link you mention is not the problem I'm having. You might be interested to hear though that the problem doesn't appear to be solved by updating to DX9.0b ... all I can suggest for the moment is to watch this space

Thanks for the tip. I followed your suggestion. There appears to be a problem with the data transfer using firewire. Reading some of the posts you collected concerning Sony, I saw that Sony exports MPEG which MM2 can't digest. Is that correct? Funny thing is that I managed to complete a whole project using the firewire before the problem appeared on the next one. However, the PC generated an error msg when trying to send an .AVI file from the PC the camcorder, which msg was sent on to Microsoft. What do you think I can expect from that? Any further suggestions would also be greatly appreciated. Peter

Standard digital video is transferred via firewire, not USB. Sony camcorders
can often save to memory sticks in other formats than standard digital
video, like MPEG2.

Your first post said you were using USB to transfer... a whole project via
firewire is a totally different thing. Maybe one project with DV-AVI and
another with MPEG2!!!

This may be part of the answer, although the project I'm having trouble with is recorded onto tapes not memory sticks. On the camcorder display the ominous letters MPEG do appear, meaning perhaps that it was recorded in that format? The question would then be "how do I convert it into DV-AVI" if that is the format required by MovieMaker2 ? Thanks. Peter

Probably best to do the conversion using the Sony software that came with
the camcorder... see the Importing Source Files.... Video... MPEG2 page of
my site for info about Movie Maker and MPEG2 files.

Thanks for the lead to Ligos. Having read through the information I must admit though that I didn't understand any of it. What should I be looking at, the Indeo XP codec at USD 14.95, the MediaRig (cost ?) or what? This really is a foreign language to me.

Hi Peter,

You're the first to ask that, and I don't have a great answer... maybe
someone else has. I guess all of my MPEG2 codecs have always been included
with something else. DVD reading and writing software needs an MPEG2 codec
and includes it. Sonic's MyDVD came with my laptop and it's DVD burner, and
then I installed TMPGEnc which also included an MPEG2 codec. I think it was
TMPGEnc that brought along my Ligos codec. But I'm not really sure... it
just kind of kicked in and helped me with Movie Maker and MPEG2 files.

TMPGEnc provides a 30 day free trial period, including the MPEG2 codec.
Maybe using it for a couple weeks will help you see if it provides all you
need.... and purchasing it would give you a great utility and the codec too.

Oh boy!! There has to be an easier way than this.
What baffles me is that a) the PC won't recognise the camcorder with only the firewire plugged in b) a captured stream into MM2 using USB has no sound c) no stream can be captured and converted into DV-AVI directly from the camcorder d) I haven't been successful in converting (or importing) a clip captured via Sony's MovieShaker into MovieMaker2.
If you have any ideas as to the above, I surely would be grateful to hear them. Thanks. Peter
