An error message reading:

Failed to load control 'Inet' from MSINET.OCX. Your
version of MSINET.OCX may be outdated. Make sure you are
using to version of the control that was provided with
your applicaton.

This window comes up every time I try to run the Media
Player. I haven't done any changes or intallations to
Windows, so I have no idea what's going on.

My son's computer is doing the same thing, noticed that the error
message is a window pop-up titled "werule". Is this a virus?

There seems to be many notes on the werule virus (We Rule). As for:
MSINET.OCX, it is a spam harvester, generally written in VB.

I'm not sure I agree with you there. MSINET.OCX is Microsoft's Interne
Transfer Control, quite commonly used within perfectly legitimat
software for internet data transfers (e.g. web/ftp).

There are a couple of email harvesters that happen to use this active
control, and consequently in logs of web servers that have bee
'scanned' by these programs, you'll see the useragent string "Microsof
URL Control - x.xx.xxxx".

That does not make MSINET.OCX a spam harvester.

For that dumb comment I really hope Microsoft revokes your MVP status.

1. MSINET.OCX is _definately not_ a spam harvester.

2. It is the Microsoft Internet Control which gives programmers the
ability to make their applications connect to the internet and
retrieve content through a standard API.

3. It is not written in Visual Basic, however you can use it through
VB, VC++ and any programming language that supports OCX's.

Richard.
