Trouble reading HD

I'm using MS WindowsXP Professional, Version 2002

I have a 30 Gb Seagate Barracuda ATA II hard hooked up to a USB2 port
using one of those adapter thingamajigs. The drive is from one of my
older computers. It has 6 or 8 partitions and alot of data on it
that I would like to try to salvage.

There's some kind of problem with the drive that, intermittently,
prevents its data from being read.

I hook it up, XP detects the new hardware and starts indexing the
partitions but then the HD starts making a clicking noise and XP stops
reading the drive. If I unplug the HD's power for a split second I can
usually get it to resume.

The problem is that this happens many, many times and eventually I
can't get the process to continue. I've spent many hours with this and
have never succeded in making it through all the partitions.

I might have a better chance at success if I could tell XP to read
just one partition at a time and then recover that data before
attempting the next partition.

Any ideas will be very sincerely appreciated.

Thank you,

Don

'clicking noise' ? sounds like the hd has failed.
Try the seagate tools checking utility, available on their site

If by Indexing you mean the indexing service, turn it off for this drive
