Hi Richard,
try : Format|Cells>Custom and in the field Type, type: "0"0 (in this case,
the zip will start allways with a zero),
or try to format the cell as Text
Regards.

Select the cell(s), row(s), and/or column(s) with the Zip Code in it.

Click "Format" from the menu bar, then click on "Cells...".

Under Category, click "Special".
Under Type, click "Zip Code".

Click OK.

Thanks so much, the information was very helpful and solved the problem I
was having. now if I could pose another question that is related to my first
question. my addresses were in an excel format and then I used word to make
address labels using the mail merge application. the excel spreadsheet had
the Name, address, City, state and zipcodes in separate columns.however when
I printed the labels the State was missing. I don't know what went wrong.
I'm very new at this. Thanks again

I would really suggest making text entries instead of numbers
whether you are entering US or international zip codes you
would be more consistent, and as text they would be left justified
automatically.

To fix your existing codes (convert to text values) see
Fix up for 5 digit US zip codes (#fixUSzip5)
