we have trouble joining a just-purchased winxppro/sp2 box to our nt4
domain.
Seems that the client insist to try the join in AD mode (sorry for
the italian):

(codice di errore 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)
La query è stata eseguita per il record SRV per _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.XXX.it
Le cause più comuni per questo tipo di errore includono:
- Il record DNS SRV non è registrato in DNS.
- Una o più delle zone seguenti non includono la delega alla relativa zona
figlio:
XXX.it
it
. (la zona principale)
Per informazioni sulla risoluzione di questo problema, fare clic su ?.
and clearly the nt4 have no AD, no dns, no wins (5 clients on the
net).
TCP/IP networking work, i can ping server and other clients and i
can also use the web.
We have other xppro/sp2 clients, but they have joined the domain
without the sp2, some month/year ago, and then upgraded to sp2.
Seems that with the sp2 XP if there's a bi-component domain (as
XXX.it) try the AD join only, or try the Ad join first and does
not fallback to ``traditional'' NT domain join.
I think there's a registry entry to tackle with, but i've not
found any clue on KB (i've found the converse, force an AD join
with a mono-component domain) nor on google.
